Initially developed in the 1950's by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Navy, the F-4 Phantom became one of the premier fighter jets for the American military and 12 other countries. Designed to be a two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic interceptor and fighter bomber, the F-4 Phantom saw combat in Vietnam, Israel, Iran, and Turkey. A total of 5,195 F-4s were built, with production ending in 1985. It is the most numerous US supersonic jet ever built. Over the course of its lifetime, the F-4 established 16 speed, altitude and time-to-climb records. Five of these records remained unbeaten until the F-15 Eagle appeared in 1975
