Operation Chastise was the official name given to the Dam Busters raid against three German dams on the night of 16th May 1943. Led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, 19 Lancasters of 617 Squadron took off to fly the daring raid. Two of the dams - the Mohne and Eder were breached whilst the Sorpe sustained minor damage but held strong. Out of the 133 crew to fly that mission 53 were killed and 3 were taken prisoner after bailing out.The surviving crew received a heroes welcome home with Guy Gibson being awarded the Victoria Cross.
