Undoubtedly the most iconic aircraft of the RAF, the Spitfire reigned supreme throughout World War 2. Designed by RJ Mitchell at Supermarine Aviation, the Spitfire prototype - K5054 first flew on the 5th March 1936. In excess of 20,000 were built and the fact that it remained in service until 1955 shows it was a formidable thoroughbred.
