Nicknamed ‘The Wooden Wonder’, after being constructed largely of wood, the Mosquito first flew on the 25th November 1940. In 1941 it became one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world, capable of out-pacing the Spitfire of the day by 19mph! A total of 7781 were built and the RAF finally retired the type in 1963
