Lancaster
Forming the backbone of British Bomber Command during World War 2, the mighty Lancaster took part in over 156,000 raids over enemy territory dropping more than 650,000 tons of bombs. On average a Lancaster was expected to survive 25 bombing missions before being lost to enemy action. The Lancaster’s best known raid is probably ‘Operation Chastise’, where 19 aircraft of 617 Squadron attacked The Ruhr dams with Barnes Wallace’s famous bouncing bomb. Out of 7377 Lancasters built during the war years only 2 flying examples remain today.
